Deep in the South-West corner of Colorado there is an ancient city which was built onto the cliff-side over 1,000 years ago. It is hard to imagine what the two farmers were thinking when they came across this historical site in 1888, on a hunt for their stray cattle. Their surprise turned out to be an ancient cliff dwelling left over by the Pueblo People, and is the largest cliff-dwelling ever found in North America. You can still see this amazing historical site today at Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado.

The main attraction at Mesa Verde National Park is the Cliff Palace, which is the most famous cliff-dwelling in America. Mostly made from sandstone, mortar, and wooden beams, there are 150 rooms built into the dwelling. Archaeologists estimate that the population of Cliff Palace was approximately 100, and that it may have functioned as some kind of administrative and religious site for the surrounding communities.

In addition to Cliff Palace, Balcony House is also a popular stop for visitors. After climbing a 32-foot ladder and crawling through a 12-foot tunnel, you will be rewarded with a cliff dwelling of a small village that was well protected due to the difficult entry and exit point. Although much smaller than Cliff Palace, Balcony House provides extraordinary views into the past of the Pueblo People.

Most of the main historical sites at Mesa Verde National Park require a ranger-guided tour for access. Tours leave approximately every 30 minutes, and visitors should expect at least an hour tour at every site. For a truly special experience, book a 90 minute Twilight Tour of Cliff Palace which will be led from a character in Mesa Verde's past.  Mesa Verde National Park gives us a rare glimpse at early North American civilizations, and their cliff-dwellings will leave a lifetime impression on even the most traveled visitors.
