Paris, the cosmopolitan capital of France, is - with 2.2 million people living in the dense (105 km²) central city and almost 12 million people living in the whole metropolitan area - one of the largest agglomerations in Europe. Getting around

Be a mole and use the underground Metro system, which has over300 stations. It runs 5am-12.30am. Single Journey tickets are around Rs90. Multiple day tickets are also available. Metro tickets can also be used on the excellent bus service, which is a more scenic way of traveling around the city.

10 Things to do in Paris

1) Soak in the atmosphere at the famous 12th century Notre Dame Roman Catholic cathedral – people, religion no bar, come here from all over the world to reflect and pray (Cathedral Notre-Dam De Paris 6 Parvis Notre-Dame, place Jean-Paul II; free entry to the ground level; 8am-6.1pm).

2)Take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful gardens of Versailles, rich history. They also provide a fantastic view of  Versailles Palace (40-minute train from Paris to Versailles Rive Gauche station, gardens are a five-minute walk from the entrance; 8am-8:30pm; free except on Sunday when the musical fountains are on Rs 330).

4)A must-seefor all visitors, Montmartre Hill is the highest natural point in Paris. At the top of the climb is the sacre-coeur, a giant white church dedicated to the heart of Jesus, also offering spectacular views over the city (Parvis du secre-coeur. Paris 18; dome open 6am-11pm summer time)

5)Ascend the 384m to the top of the Eiffel Tower for an unforgettable experience. It has three visitor floors (book online; summer 9.45am-12.45am; lift accessRs 480 adult, Rs 380 child).

7)Tuck into a swanky dinner as you cruise past the most famous sights in Paris with Bateaux Mouches . 10)Visit one of the three main flea markets of Paris. We recommend the Saint Ouen Flea Market, but get there early to snap up the bargains; stalls mays tart to close at lunch (take the metro to Porte de Clignancourt on Line4 and head to Rue des Rosiers; 9am-6pm Sat, l0am-6pm Sun, 11am-5pm Mon).
